Wonderful sign doodling by @coltbowden

“This weekend I had a few hours to sit through a confernce meeting, so I brought along the doodle book, and sharp pencil.. I started a little sign saying and then another and another, and before I knew it, I had filled up 9 (small) pages! I’ve been really into Steve Powers’ & Jeff Canhams’ sign work with catchy sayings on them.”

Would love to buy some prints!

Check out more of Colt’s work at http://www.voilapress.com/

Hamburg’s best designed locksmith and cobbler “Schanzenschuhmacher”

I was walking through Hamburg yesterday when I passed a beautiful old bike with a handpainted sign on it.
As I got my camera out to take some pictures a guy came up to talk to me. Turns out he was the owner of the bike and oh, he had some tales to tell!
When I asked him about the signs he told me about his friend the decorator who, next to his day job, started to paint signs because he was interested in the craft itself and has, as the cobbler, a profound love for “Handwerk” (the German word for craft). The whole visual identity of “Schanzenschuhmacher” is built on a vintage style and craftsmanship design. Torsten, the owner, was very keen on mentioning how important good quality and lasting products are to him. So if you’re in need of getting your shoes fixed, need a new lock or a hand-painted sign, visit Grönwoldt and Lischewski at Kampstraße 18.

Old school as they are, they do no have a webpage. I took a picture of their (equally beautiful) business card if you’d like the details.

Copenhagen Typography I

I’m spending the week in Copenhagen and since I want to start with sign painting I decided to do a little research.
So I’m wandering the streets taking pictures of nice signs with words, numbers and icons in them.
Here’s a little excerpt from today’s walk around Vesterbro’s Værnedamsvej.

Hand-drawn typography and visual intelligence: Matthew Leibowitz, a visual translator (via @storeytom)

Quite an interesting character and also a great article over at thisisdisplay.org

Leibowitz’ design philosophy:

“The complete integration of typography with the graphic image is indicative of the maturity attained by the contemporary designer. The role of designer is that of visual translator. The translation can communicate well only if expressed in clear, concise terminology to the audience for whom it is intended. Ideas and content are expressed with the designer’s imagination and awareness. Synchronized, these qualities are his tools of creativity.”

I quite like the typo job at Circus Hotel at Rosenthaler Platz

I went up and asked them how they did it. They used some kind stencil foil and then painted the letters.
The hotel’s graphic designer came up with the idea of putting city names on the wall and then they hired a company to do the painting job.
Really like the crafty aspect of this. Plus it stands out next to all those vinyl print ads that are plastered all over Rosenthaler Platz.
Good job!
